Are your Organic Essential oils really organic?

ARE YOUR ORGANIC OILS REALLY ORGANIC? USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC SEAL VS. STATED ORGANIC CLAIMS

  • STATED ORGANIC VERSUS USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC

The term organic can be interchangeably used to misrepresent products as being USDA Certified Organic. There is a difference between products that are authorized and guaranteed by the National Organic Program (NOP), a regulatory program initiated by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service that grants USDA Certified Organic Seal that can be authenticated on the Organic Integrity Database, and products that are claimed to be organic.

  • THE ORGANIC ESSENTIAL OIL BOOM IN THE IN U.S. MARKET

The US has experienced a surge in popularity of aromatherapy and heightened interest in organically produced essential oils, in large part due to an increase in disposable income and a booming cosmetic and personal care industry. Given this immense market potential, many individuals and manufacturers are trying to carve their niche by either producing or sourcing essential oils and branding them as certified organic. However, USDA Certified Organic products must meet strict regulations to be considered unadulterated and free from chemicals, additives, and other factors that affect their purity. Additionally, The USDA Organic Certified Seal draws a clear line between internationally recognized organic standards and unregulated company monitored internal organic controls.

  • THE NATIONAL ORGANIC PROGRAM & USDA CERTFIED ORGANIC CERTIFICATION

It is imperative to draw the line between an ordinary organic label and a USDA Certified Organic Label. The former implies that the product is not Third-Party Certified, whereas the latter meets an internationally recognized USDA organic standard that is regulated by the National Organic Program. There are many reputable essential oil companies in the market that claim to be organic, but that does not mean they comply with the rigorous standards of the NOP. It is also no simple feat to meet NOP regulations and achieve USDA Certification due to the stringent policies that ensure a product meets all standards in its journey from farm to bottle. Not all companies are willing to undergo such a rigorous and expensive process, thus raising concerns about their organic claims and ultimately their commitment to their standards and customers.

  • VERIFY ORGANIC CLAIMS ON THE ORGANIC INTEGRITY DATABASE

It is important to realize that many companies misrepresent their essential oil portfolio as USDA Certified Organic, although none of their products are legally certified by the NOP. In order to maintain the integrity of the USDA Certified Organic industry, we need to verify whether essential oil brands are actually authenticated and accredited by the USDA. The USDA Organic Integrity Database lists “Certified” operations (products or brands) that can legitimately sell, represent and label their products as USDA Certified Organic. To check the accreditation of a particular product or brand, visit USDA Organic Integrity Database, type the product name or company name in the Search operations bar and hit Enter. Check the status bar for being “Certified”. As shown below, all of Zongle’s therapeutic grade organic essential oils such as Organic FrankincenseOrganic PeppermintOrganic Lavender , Organic Lemon , Organic Melalueca  and many more are all USDA Certified Organic essential Oils on the USDA Organic Integrity Database.

The products that consumers of organic products buy should deliver true value for their money. It is a well-known fact that organic products are generally more expensive than their non-organic counterparts; therefore, it behooves the consumer to substantiate organic claims to ensure they are getting what they pay for. Ultimately though, the benefits of using USDA Certified Organic products outweigh the price. The most important reason to substantiate organic claims is to maintain the integrity and longevity of the USDA Organic guarantee in order for us to live our best and healthiest lives.
